AMERICAN BARTER EXCHANGE works on a system of Debits and Credits. Debits are subtractions from your trade balance taken when you purchase on the system. Credits are added to your account when you sell on the system. We operate like a bank. ABE extends interest free credit lines, giving you the opportunity to purchase goods and services without paying cash for your purchase. (For example): You take your vehicle to one of our auto repair shops. Your total purchase is $500. Use your ABE card in lieu of cash. (Seller receives standard sales tax) Depending on which Fee Plan you have signed up on you may pay up to a 10% transaction fee. That means that you just paid $50 cash for a $500 purchase, saving your cash flow, your barter account will be adjusted to reflect the purchase Now we are responsible to send you new business to repay your debit and earn credits for further purchases. Sales and Purchases are recorded on ABE sales slips. Your ABE account is adjusted when the ABE copy is received in the mail along with the aplicable purchase fee (if any). The ABE membership card is used to identify a member and his or her account number. An authorization code is required for purchases over $100. You can acquire an authorization code by calling the main office and speaking to a Trade Director.
Monthly Statements A monthly statement is issued to each member displaying: their debits, credits, any cash fees due, existing credit line, and their ending balance.
Credit LinesABE credit lines are established by the member's ability to service the account as well as the demand in the ABE system for their particular goods and services. The starting credit line is $1500, which can be adjusted at the discretion of ABE. Credit line adjustment can be considered at any time upon member request. Remember ABE credit lines are always interest free.
The IRSThe IRS treats barter the same as cash. A 1099-B Form is sent to each member at the end of each calendar year showing all of his or her sales. It is each member's responsibility to deduct expenses, as they would normally do. Also many of your fees associated with your barter membership may be tax-deductible, you should consult your tax professional for more information.
